A hard fought competition in hockey, soccer and rugby league at NEWS 2009 sees the NSW Colts win the Roger Melnyk Trophy.

Soccer - Victoria Vipers 1 defeat NSW Colts 1 on penalty shoot out
Hockey - NSW Colts 7 defeat Victoria Vipers 6
Rugby League - NSW Colts 28 defeat Western Wasps 6

Soccer - Western Wasps 2 defeat Queensland Gladiators 1
Hockey - Queensland Gladiators 4 defeat SA Scorpions 2
Rugby League - Queensland Gladiators 18 defeat Victoria Vipers 16
Opening & Day 1 Soccer
NEWS 2009 was officially opened on Tuesday 21 April by My Alan Overton AM OAM, Chairman of the Parramatta National Rugby League Club.
Play soon got underway in Soccer. By the end of Day 1 the NSW Colts were ahead with convincing wins against all teams. The Victoria Vipers were close behind in the points losing only to the NSW Colts.
Day 2 Hockey
Day 2 Hockey saw the Victoria Vipers fight back strongly, beating all comers except for a draw against the NSW Colts. The South Australian Scorpions staged the upset of the day defeating NSW by one goal 3-2.
Day 3 Rugby League
Day 3 Rugby League again saw NSW dominating with a win in all five games. The Western Wasps from WA earned their place in the final by beating Victoria 30-20.
